The Musandam Zipline : World’s Longest Zipline Over Open Water

Did you know there is a zipline in Musandam? It’s also the world’s longest zipline over open water, and officially accredited by the Guinness World Records. Would you give it a try?

Here’s a little background, and our experience of the Musandam Zipline – so you can decide if you’re brave enough to give it a go 🙂

Where exactly is the Musandam Zipline?

Well, you got to get yourself to Oman Adventure Centre – which is located right by Atana Khasab. Don’t worry, there is free on-site parking right in front of the centre.

Oman Adventure Centre is about a 5-10 minute drive from Atana Musandam (where we stayed), or approximately 3 hours drive from Dubai Marina.

Musandam Zipline : The Brief, and The Wait.

You sign away a disclaimer (you know – that form with all the fine print you don’t really read…), the team gives you a briefing, and then you wait patiently while watching their promotional video that goes into loop – where you realise, ah crap – what did I just sign myself into?

They then get you to stand on the scales – minimum 50kg, maximum 110kg. When all is ready, fine and dandy – you get into their shuttle and they take you along the windy roads, and up Jebel Fitt to the take-off point (noted on Google Maps above, as Qada Line). It’s about a 10 minutes drive.

Here’s the view from the top, looking back down. Stunning, right?

Musandam Zipline : The Preparation

Once you get there – the team asks – who’s going first? Everyone looks at each other – and I’m very proud to say that I put my hands up. It’s one of those situations where I rather just ‘get it out of the way’. The longer I wait, the more nervous I get – the higher chances of me chickening out 🙂

The team then kits you and your partner up. That’s one awesome thing about the Musandam Zipline – there are two lines side by side, so you can do it with a friend or your other half.

You put on this…… bag. It’s very much like a vest / sausage roll. You tug on it, make sure it’s sturdy enough to hold your weight.

Then you get on the ‘steps’, (see below) and then there’s a lot of carabiners going here and there as they hook you on. Lots of things going through your head at this point. You gotta trust these guys, right?

Then, the team asks you to ‘lie face down‘. At this point – there is no turning back.

The countdown goes – and off you go.

As you zipline through the air – I had expected to feel some sort of discomfort – like that “stomach in your throat” feeling when you do the roller-coaster but there was none of it. Much like Jais Sky Tour, it was actually very comfortable. Weird, right?

You look down and there’s the rocky Hajar Mountains beneath. Your other half is zipping down right beside you on another line and you try and sneak a cheeky wave, mid-air.

Soon after – it’s literally you and the deep blue see. You’re soaring above the Arabian Gulf, like a bird. And for a split second you think – well, if this didn’t work – at least I’m falling into the ocean, ha ha. Not too bad, right?

You look left, and right, and it’s absolutely beautiful. You try not to turn too much as you can feel your whole body moves along with your head. Afterall, you’re in a sausage roll.

At the point I’m thinking – bloody hell I should have invested in a 360 cam and brought it along!

Have a peek of the take-off, in this video below.

Getting to the other side

As you approach the landing platform – you see the guy flapping his arm.

That’s the signal for you to do the same – so that you ‘slow down’ upon landing. You do the same – you’re literally a bird at this point. I wonder if they let you get dressed up for the zipline? 🙂

And then you stop. Ninety seconds of pure thrill.

The adrenaline high is at its peak – and you’re either in tears, or laughing your head off.

It’s one experience to add to your bucket list – for sure. I think I’ve officially become an adrenaline junkie! A bit late in life I know 😉

Can family or friends who are not doing the Musandam Zipline, watch?

If you are travelling with extended family, and they are not doing the zipline – they can actually walk over to the arrival platform which is actually located a few steps away from the Oman Adventures Centre.

This means they can actually watch you ‘arrive’! It’s great if you went with your parents, and they can bring your kids to watch daddy and mummy arrive on the zipline 🙂

Will we do the Musandam Zipline again?

Yes – I will very happily put my hands up again for this one.

My brother was saying that – what you see – is literally like a drone shot when it’s taking footage above the water of the landscape. Except you – you are the drone. How amazing it would be, to see this everyday. Like a bird, soaring between the mountains, above the Arabian Gulf.

Add it to your ‘Things to do in Musandam’ – next time you plan a trip there. Do the Dolphin Tour of course. But do this too 🙂
