I don’t think I have ever done a movie review on this site. I thought long and hard how to express my views on a movie that not only I, but the entire family immensely enjoyed. An Instagram post or a few stories that will disappear just didn’t seem to do it justice. So here you go – a little review of a movie you have to go watch in the cinema because boy oh boy – was it an experience.
We walked into Theatre 7 in Reel Cinemas at the Dubai Mall on a Saturday afternoon with zero expectations. I didn’t even watch the trailer. My husband asked me as we were driving up Sheikh Zayed Road today, ” Can you check what the ratings are on IMDB? ”
I answered ” What for ? What if it’s bad, we’re still going to watch it right? ” No I wasn’t trying to start a fight on a fine Saturday afternoon, pre-movie, ha ha.
I checked anyways and it was a solid 8.2/10 (Note : 200+ reviews, on the 14th of September). Well – it should be alright then if it was 8.2?
So, what made it so good?
Ah, how do I even start?
Every little aspect – we loved.
The graphics – was breathtakingly beautiful. It was very different to what we had seen. Some animation make it very ‘real’, some are just ‘cartoony’, – whereas in The Wild Robot, as it is entirely set on a island filled with greenery and animals, they’ve made it look like a painting, or a watercolour coming to live. That, paired with the music score that they have used in the different scenes completely takes you away from reality into a world of love, kindness and colours – and it just reminds you what a movie experience is all about.
On the storyline itself – yes it is simple, but sometimes you don’t really need a complex plot, do you? To quote the official blurp on Reel Cinemas :
After a shipwreck, an intelligent robot called Roz is stranded on an uninhabited island. To survive the harsh environment, Roz bonds with the island’s animals and cares for an orphaned baby goose.
There was just the right amount of humour throughout the movie, and boy oh boy – prepare tissues as if you’re anywhere close to how I am like – you will be bawling your eyes out.
The story covered friendship, love, courage, determination, resilience and just so many qualities – I was super glad that we brought all three kids along to this one. Note that our kids are 4, 6 and 8 years old.
My 8 year old daughter said to me, ” Mummy that’s the best cartoon I’ve ever seen. ”
As a mum – the story did hit close to heart. To raise little ones – is a tough, tough job, and you can be an amazing mother, even if you did not bear the little one in your body (The relationship between Roz, the robot and the baby goose).
And then you watch them grow up, and leave home…… you get the gist. I was a complete mess in the cinema, haha. I’m just glad there are no cameras during movie previews ( much unlike events in restaurants and hotels where you tend to end up being part of their socials )
And to be honest – as of right now, The Wild Robot is at the very top of my list for Favourite Animations. I will be more than happy to go back to the cinema to watch this again.
And you? You gotta go. Please do. And come back and tell me what you think of it.
The Wild Robot is showing in Reel Cinemas in Dubai, from the 26th of September 2024.
