SushiYaki – An Upscale Family Japanese Spot at Souk Madinat Jumeirah

Over the weekend, we took the kids to Souk Madinat Jumeirah for lunch. It’s been a long time since we’ve step out there. Felt almost like a tourist, as we drove over that bridge and watched a group of ladies having their photos taken with the Burj Al Arab behind them. Where were we going?

Sushiyaki – a relatively newcomer to Souk Madinat Jumeirah. Sushi with the kids 🙂

A little introduction.

Where is SushiYaki?

Well – we all know it’s in Souk Madinat Jumeirah. I can attempt to describe to you where it is but you’re still going to use the map when you get there, right? 🙂 If it’s of any help – it’s where Americano used to be, and sits right next to Taverna Greek Kitchen – by the Souk Madinat waterways.

Going with the kids during the summer time? Don’t worry – from the basement parking, to the venue – the only ‘outdoor’ part you have to walk through once you find your way through the souk is – out the doors, down the stairs, and Sushiyaki is on your right.

You do get 3 hours complimentary parking at Souk Madinat Jumeirah. Just remember to get the team to validate it before you leave.

Is SushiYaki family-friendly?

Don’t worry – it is very much so.

We know that a lot of the licensed japanese restaurants in Dubai lean towards the fine dining side. That’s looking at the likes of Sushi Samba, Clay, Buddha Bar, Attiko and more. SushiYaki on the other hand, is what I’ll call an upscale family dining spot.

When we stepped into the restaurant – the first thing I noticed were the wine glasses. That tiny, sleek stem of a wine glass you will find in very nice restaurants you don’t usually bring young kids to. But hey – there’s no white table clothes, and they do have booths – so that’s good enough for us. We quickly ushered the three kids into one, and swiftly asked the team to take away the wine glasses – and everything else after that was perfect.

I am also happy to report that there were other families with toddlers that afternoon. We weren’t the only one! Our kids were comfortable, and the team were very accommodating.

I personally think Japanese food is great with kids as a lot of it is bite-sized and ‘finger-friendly’. Edamame, Sushi, Yakitori. Our kids love noodles and the team proposed to prepare that first before our sushi platter came. See, they know kids have zero patience 😉

SushiYaki’s Sushi Sharing Platters

Did I mention they do sushi platters? Just look at this beauty.

Yes – this is a photo taken from the PR team. Do have a look at what we got on the day – Scroll down!

This, is their ‘Lunch Moriawase Platter’ – which as you can see – is a selection of signature maki and nigiri.

There’s salmon, tuna, and yellowtail nigiri (3 pieces, each), as well as a selection of maki – to include vegetarian options (which very quickly disappeared, thanks to our kids!) It’s evidently prepared with a lot of love and care, placed on a beautiful bamboo boat – and would be absolutely perfect for celebrations or just a nice lunch with friends and family.

My husband and I love sushi – so this was an absolute treat. If you have a peek at their ala carte menu, 2 salmon nigiri’s are typically priced at 35 AED, and makis are around 80AED on average. This platter, is definitely value for money – priced at 250AED. Perfect for those who ‘can’t figure out what to order’ as you do get a little bit of everything 🙂

Still wondering how our platter looked like? Here you go.

SushiYaki’s Yakitori Grills

Also available during lunch, is SushiYaki’s Yakitori Platter – 6 no. of their signature yakitoris, placed above hot smokin’ coals.

There’s asparagus, topped with crispy garlic, and a sprinkle of Togarashi. Salmon, glazed with misoyaki sauce, and succulent chicken thigh with soy and mirin. Our favourite had to be the black cod with shiro miso sauce. Almost wished we had ordered some fresh steamed rice to go with the burst of flavours but we were just so full, especially from the sushi platter that came together.

SushiYaki’s Lunch Yakitori Platter is priced at 240AED. Do note that you also order the yakitori from the Ala Carte menu – and they range from 65 AED for 2 no. chicken thighs, to 95 AED for the black cod. This is again, a great value – especially if you want to try just one of each kind. I can assure you – it’s a lot of meat, and mouthwateringly satisfying.

Give it a go, with the family

Next time the kids are asking for sushi, and you feel like an ice-cold Kirin draught – take them to SushiYaki at Souk Madinat Jumeirah. It’s a nice, upscale dining spot – comfortable for the family, and serves exquisite sushi and yakitori, amongst other Japanese fare. We will definitely be keen to return to see what else is on the menu. Another time, for sure 😉
