Family Dining at BBG: An Upscale Beachfront Experience

We returned to One&Only Royal Mirage’s beachfront restaurant mid-October with the family for an early dinner. Beach Bar & Grill is now – BBG, with a new menu serving Mediterranean and a big emphasis on fresh seafood. Don’t worry – it is still very much family-friendly in the daytime, and becomes an ultra romantic spot at dark.

Here’s how our early dinner with the kids went, at BBG.

The Journey

The experience starts right from the moment that you arrive at the One&Only Royal Mirage. BBG – we tell the security, and he recites the directions, as he would have done a million times throughout the day. We drive up the road lined with palm trees on both sides and approach the entrance at The Palace. Gold statues of bedoin on camelback welcome us.

I give the kids a quick customary briefing before we get out of the car. The usual “Please behave, don’t shout, don’t run. This is a nice hotel,” talk. They know the drill.

At 5:15pm – the sun was already low, trees casting large shadows on the manicured grounds. We should’ve brought a ball to kick around. The kids started running around – as kids do, when they are in a big space. We took a few family photos – and quietly wished we brought a tripod to take a proper one. Next time, next time. Ball. Tripod. Add to notes.

Come 5:30pm – we rounded up the kids and headed into the restaurant for an early dinner.

The Menu & Our Experience

Starters

The team welcomed us and brought over the menu. There’s evidently a lot of seafood now, with starters such as seabass ceviche, octopus salad and garlic prawns. A quick scan through and we went with the Scallops Crudo (180 AED), Superfood Salad (95 AED) and Eggplant Parmigiana (90AED).

Husband and I thoroughly enjoyed these dishes to start. The salad – healthy and light, together with the fresh scallops and slight tanginess from the passionfruit vinaigrette. The baked eggplant was rich, savoury and comforting – which we ate with the freshly baked bread that was brought to table at the start of the meal.

Mains

As we are both watching our waistline these days – we skipped the pasta and went straight for the mains. The team explained that the fish would depend on what is available on the table, as they are freshly caught. It was turbot that day – and he chose to have it grilled. The team brings it out as a whole, and debones it right by the table. It’s hard work, impressive – and as you would expect from a freshly grilled fish – tasty.

I had gone for their Australian Black Angus Rib-Eye, special of the day – perfectly chargrilled to medium, as requested.

BBG’s Kids Menu

Happy to see that BBG does have a Kids’ Menu and they were fairly reasonably priced – circa 55AED per dish.

Each child went for something different – Hamburger and Chips, Pizza Margharita and Penne Pasta with – as my 7 -year old requests, just butter. Just to highlight that we did order for the kids first and requested that the dishes be served before ours. And this came to the table, super prompt, which we were very much appreciative of.

When the kids were done with their meals – we let them run off to the sand to play, while the husband and I had a quiet date. We could see them from our tables on the terrace. It was just perfect.

We left BBG around 7pm – when it was getting dark. You could see couples starting to come in for a proper date night. We’ll definitely come back again another day for a date night as well.

An Upscale Family-friendly Beachfront Restaurant

Take the family over to BBG for lunch or an early dinner, as they are open all day from mid-day. It is an upscale restaurant, so you could save it for a special celebration or the occasional splurge. Its location right on the beach makes it so comfortable for families as the little ones can run off to play within sight while you sip on glass of bubbly at sunset.

Pssst. Did you know they also do a family-friendly brunch every Sunday?

Disclosure : We were guests of One&Only Royal Mirage to review the new menu with the family.
