GABA – Asian Tea Room and a Hidden Bar in Dubai Marina

We get excited when we see another licensed venue opening up within walking distance from home. Introducing GABA, the latest addition to the row of bars down the Harbour end of Dubai Marina. I met up with a friend on a schoolnight, to review the venue over an early dinner.

Here’s what to expect at GABA.

Where exactly is Gaba in Dubai?

GABA is located on the mezzanine floor of Marina Gate 2 Towers in the Dubai Marina. Marina Residents would know this area well – situated right above Carrefour, and along the same row as Ritzi and Chalco’s Cantina.

If you don’t live in this area – don’t worry, GABA actually has a valet service. Owned by the team running Chalhona by Vasilchuki on the promenade level – the valet booth is located at the roundabout in front of Damac Heights, opposite Marriott Harbour. I know, I know – traffic is typically madness there but hey – at least they have valet and it’s free so don’t complain too much.

Asian Tea Room

As you walk towards GABA – you’ll find the entrance completely concealed. Find the handles and open the doors – and hello there, an asian tea room with all the proper antique wooden tables and chairs, to include the drawers we used to see in chinese medicine stores back in Malaysia.

Imprinted in chinese characters on the counter – 茶 馆, pronounced as ‘cha guan’ in mandarin, which means literally Tea Shop. Gaba has over 40 chinese teas – amongst many which are rare and premium, and you can also opt to try these through a traditional tea ceremony. We didn’t do this at our visit but we definitely will return next time.

Hidden Cocktail Bar

Ask them about the cocktail bar and they’ll walk you through a hidden door, to low-lit speakeasy inspired by elite Asian clubs you would see in Hong Kong and China. There’s pop-art pieces along the walls, cosy seating to the corners. It was unlike any bar that I have been in the Dubai Marina – or hey, maybe I just don’t go out to ‘these kinda places’ much anymore. Three kids, life, y’know – the usual excuse.

What sort of food does GABA serve?

The staff came over to go through the menu. I was secretly smiling as I realised it was all on one page. So rare these days isn’t it. Minimal use of brain cells to choose what to have, on a Wednesday evening. Perfect.

We ordered a few things to share. The beef tartare ( 85 AED ) came, served on crispy sushi rice. I like it when venues come up with something different and surprise you a little as tartare is typically served, spread out on a plate ( and you have to pry it off with chopsticks ). There’s charred edamame ( 35 AED ), chicken karaage with black garlic mayo ( 45 AED ), ebi tempura ( 4 pieces, 45 AED ).

From the robata corner we shared ume shiso ( 2 pieces, chicken thigh – 45 AED ), beef kushiyaki ( 2 pieces, 85 AED ) and corn and miso ( 2 pieces, 40 AED ). These I would call usual Japanese bar bites, which I personally love. Tasty, though I’ll dare say that some were a little too salty for my liking. To put into context – my mum complains that our cooking is so bland at home so that gives you an idea of my preferred level of sodium intake.

Is GABA licensed?

Of course they are. We both tried a few cocktails – with a notable one that came in a bowl with a sphere ice. Dubai’s getting more and more creative each day with their cocktails so I’m not complaining. They do have a good wine list as well if that’s what you prefer.

Are there any offers in GABA?

As of May 2025 – they have an offer for unlimited cocktails for 90 AED from 5pm to 10pm, daily. This includes espresso martinis, daiquiri and gin & tonics. Fabulous deal, right? Best bit – it’s not just for ladies. You can bring your husband along and he pays just the same. Currently this offer is ongoing – but definitely double check with them before you head over.

What’s the overall vibe like at GABA?

We were there from around 6pm till slightly after 8pm. Early, I would say. There were a few tables occupied when we got there, and later on as we were about to leave the place was almost packed. Mostly groups of friends, and a couple of people on dates. It was dark, romantic, cosy. And in case you were wondering – the bar is 21+.

Note : GABA has a DJ every Wednesday to Saturday, from 8pm onwards.

Overall Thoughts

If you’re feeling like a drink or two at 5pm – head over to GABA. We loved the overall vibe, and with it entirely enclosed – you feel like you’re out late eventhough the sun hasn’t even set outside. We’ll definitely return again with friends to see how it’s like over the weekends. On behalf of all Marina residents – thank you very much for bringing such a cool spot to this end of the Marina.

Dubai resident. Stays most of the time in the marina as she can't be bothered going anywhere else after work and in the weekends. Originally from the land of the orang utans, spent the latter half of her life in the land down under. Always on the look out for deals, loves organising get-togethers, and occasionally steals some time for a sip of wine or four at ladies nights.
