Japanese night-in @ Okku

This is my big thank you to Okku, for taking care of the ten crazy girls last Wednesday, and doing it very well 😉

For a dear friend’s hens, I had dug around online for all the private japanese tatami rooms in Dubai (post to come). We had to ensure that the tatami room was completely private as the bride-to-be would be comfortable in her own clothes and without her sheila.

Tatami room on the mezzanine floor

So few weeks ago I drove over to Okku to have a wander around, and absolutely loved the restaurant. They have three tatami rooms on the mezzanine floor, which sits 10-12 people quite comfortably.

The rooms overlook the restaurant below, so you get the music and buzz altogether but you still get your own ‘private space’ with your friends.

Jellyfish tank by the bar (you can ask the bartender if it’s real 😉 )

You could have a drink or two by the bar. We sneaked one drink just before the hens do (which had to be dry). Prices are honestly quite high, with the cheapest white wine at 59AED a glass, and unfortunately they don’t do happy hours. So save it for a ‘special date’ 😉

Back onto Wednesday. I’m very grateful that Okku actually made the effort in putting up proper shades to cover up the tatami room ay 🙂 We had requested for a female-only staff to serve us and she was always outside when we needed her (thanks Mia!). The rooms next-door were vacant as well, which was perfect so the girls could be absolutely comfortable. Ah, I think it’s only in Dubai where you  can actually do this ay  😉

We had selected various things from the Ala Carte Menu – salted and chilli edamame to start, with a few light dishes of sashimi salad hushihu salad. Next came a selection of sushi – spicy tiger shrimp, wagyu beef tataki, ebi tempura maki, king crab california maki and dragon maki. Okku makes very good sushi 🙂

Do note that it was a hens do, so we were too busy having a lot of fun i.e no photos of the food 🙂

I did however, manage to snap the desserts.

For the ten us, the bill came up to be about 3000 AED (note : we did not have any alcoholic drinks). I do recommend that you opt for the set menus if you’re going there with a big group. One of those ‘dammit, we should’ve’ moments 🙂 They do have a great lunch offer (69AED) and a Roku Menu for schoolnights (Sun-Thursdays, Sats from 6pm) – we should have ordered from this menu last week, bugger :/

Regardless, we had a great night.

Thanks Okku, for accomodating us. To Helen, to Mya, and all the other staff that came by. You cannot imagine how hard it was for me to find a japanese tatami room that was completely private, as well as fit into all our requirements 😉 You were super. Cheers.

Hello there, Chris Hemsworth 😉

And to end the post. Here’s a snapshot of the girls with the only man allowed in the party. Well, technically there was 6 of him 😉 2014 People’s Choice Sexiest Man Alive, I hear?

Dubai resident. Stays most of the time in the marina as she can't be bothered going anywhere else after work and in the weekends. Originally from the land of the orang utans, spent the latter half of her life in the land down under. Always on the look out for deals, loves organising get-togethers, and occasionally steals some time for a sip of wine or four at ladies nights.
