Sunday Family Brunch at Bussola, Jumeirah Golf Estates : ‘Little Italy’ Brunchissimo

For the first time ever – we made our way to the very prestigious Dubai neighbourhood known as Jumeirah Golf Estates. Those who live there are probably shaking their heads and laughing at that statement. We are right though, don’t you think? 🙂 Every Sunday, Bussola does a family-friendly brunch called ‘Little Italy’ Brunchissimo. We headed over with the kids to review the offering – and took the opportunity to bring the kids’ wheels so we could explore the neighbourhood after food.

Here’s what to expect, should you decide to do Bussola’s Sunday Family brunch.

Where exactly is this Bussola?

Well – this is Bussola version 2.0 – situated within the very green Jumeirah Golf Estates.

As with most golf clubs – you self-park right in front of the venue. The restaurant is on the upper level from the golf course, and has a terrace that runs along the corner. If you want a spot there – you definitely have to book early. We were there mid-January and the tables outside were fully booked. It was mixed – some adults-only tables, a few families, and we did notice two large tables where the parents were on one and all the big kids were on the other (right next to the stairs, leading down to the lawn). Smart planning, hey? 🙂

What’s in Bussola’s Brunch Menu?

As Bussola is an italian restaurant – Bussola’s brunch menu is of course ….*drumroll* – mainly italian fare. Surprise, surprise.

All food is served to table – with burrata, baked oysters with parmesan and lattughino – crisp salad with all things summery like lettuce, pecan nuts, berries and mustard dressing. They just gotta ruin it by adding goat’s cheese, don’t they? Ha ha. I’m sorry – we just one of those people who are not fans of goat’s cheese. I’m sure everyone else does! 🙂

Always a fan of burrata at brunches though. I feel it’s the perfect to start to a feast. And a nice surprise to see baked oysters as well for a change instead of the raw ones.

Moving onto mains

Next up – pizzas for the table to share.

Good ol’ margherita which always goes well in the family, and then they had to surprise us again with Gorgonzola pizza. In case you weren’t aware – that’s blue cheese. Ah, the joy of having goat’s and blue cheese one after the other, ha ha! The pork speck ( cured, lightly smoked – ham ) was delicious so the kids’ decided they were going to peel it off the pizza and leave us with the rest. Let’s be nice here – it’s not their fault that we don’t enjoy fancy cheese. To their defense – it was good pizza. The dough was home-made (we watched them make it at the counter) and done well. Next time we’ll just tell them to use a different type of cheese 🙂

And if you thought that was it – the team served their pastas next. Ricotta gnocchi with white pesto, and spaghetti chitarra with beef ragu. My husband and I loved the beef ragu spaghetti – which has been slow-cooked and shredded, tossed around with their home-made spaghetti. Yum.

Is there a kid’s menu at Bussola’s brunch?

Yes – of course. Spaghetti bolognaise, mac and cheese, pepperoni pizza, chicken nuggets and fries. All the usual favourites. Look at my sassy 6 year old and her ‘macaroni and butter only’ please on the bottom left. Her favourite! How exciting, isn’t it.

What sort of desserts do they have?

The classic tiramisu – of course, cannoli siciliani – a classic Sicilian dessert made of deep-fried pastry dough filled with smooth, creamy mascarpone. Bussola have spiced it up a little by adding pistachio – which I thought was a fabulous touch.

Any entertainment for kids?

On the ground level – there’s a bouncy castle set up, a popocorn and candy floss station and an array of toys that have been laid out on the lawn. If you pick a table on the terrace – you’ll be able to see the kids. To compare to some other family brunches around – yes, it is a very simple set up, but to be honest – it was just nice to have something or somewhere for the kids to run around free.

Overall Thoughts

If you’re looking for a chilled Italian brunch to do on a Sunday afternoon – one where it’s a bit relaxed and quiet, with space for the kids, consider Bussola at Jumeirah Golf Estates. Bring the kids’ wheels as it’s so lovely to go for a wander after all that food. We brought their bikes and rollerblades, and the husband and I got our steps in after all the carbs. Just a friendly reminder that there is goats and blue cheese in the brunch – so if you don’t have a sophisticated palette (like us) – just let them know and they’ll be more than happy to replace it with something else 🙂

Dubai resident. Stays most of the time in the marina as she can't be bothered going anywhere else after work and in the weekends. Originally from the land of the orang utans, spent the latter half of her life in the land down under. Always on the look out for deals, loves organising get-togethers, and occasionally steals some time for a sip of wine or four at ladies nights.
