Our Malaysian feast @ Rasa Sayang, Dubai

( Scroll down for photo updates from the 12th of June)

Few weeks back, I received what I felt was a rather personal invitation to Rasa Sayang. A few emails back on forth later, I found out that one of the owners, Nasseruddin, hails from the same hometown as myself as well 🙂 The other owner – Tran Son, is originally from Vietnam but have lived in Singapore for over ten years. In one of the many emails, he  wrote ” We thought that bringing real Malaysian food to Dubai would be a nice idea to satisfy the taste of Malaysian expats, or those who like Malaysian food. Every ingredient we choose in making the dishes at Rasa Sayang is carefully selected, and mostly carried directly from Malaysia, to ensure the authenticity. It is quite challenging but when we see our guests enjoying the food, we feel very happy.

And, happy was definitely an understatement for G and I, last Saturday.

It was just the two of us, so we ordered basically a drink each, an appetiser (satay chicken), two meat dishes (fish, and beef), one vege, with rice, of course. Finished off with a dessert to share. Simple. We demolished all of it.

In fact, I’m going back there again next week with the chaps from work to try out more of their dishes 🙂

Iced Teh Tarik to the left, Asam Boi (Preserved sour plum and lime) to the right
Satay Chicken
Satay Chicken

The best satay chicken in town. I have yet to see any other restaurant serve it so good, together with the rice-cakes and cucumber. Even the peanut sauce felt like I was back at home, visiting my Malay friends over Hari Raya (similar to Eid here in Dubai).

Kangkung Goreng Belacan – Stir-fried morning glory (water spinach) with chili, belacan (shrimp paste) and dried shrimp.

You can buy kangkung (the chinese call it ong choy, or eng chai) from Carrefour, every now and then. You cannot however buy belacan, or at least I don’t know where you can get it. Every Malaysian will have it in their fridge though 🙂 The easier option? Just try Rasa Sayang’s 😉

Daging Kicap Madras – Slow simmered topside of beef cooked with curry leaves, cinnamon, star anise, Malaysian curry spices, fried potato and dark soy sauce

Now to be honest this was way too hot for me. G finished it, I had probably two cubes only, but it was definitely good. So if you can handle the spiciness, order this, otherwise ask them to tone it down a lil 😉

Ikan Goreng 3 Rasa – Pan-fried whole hamour topped with sweet and sour chili gravy, tomato, pineapple, green peppers and aromatic herbs.

Ohh. I loved this. The skin was crispy, the flesh itself so tasty, the sweet and sour combination at the right balance. Have it all with white jasmine rice which at 5AED a bowl is what everyone should pay for rice here in Dubai 🙂

Ais Batu Campur

In my hometown, we call this ABC for Air Batu Campur, literally translated as Mixed Cubes of Ice. I did tell them afterwards I still prefer it simple, with coconut milk ( or evaporated milk) – red beans, green jelly thingy, corn, and cin cau. They’ve experimented it a little by adding chocolate sauce and peanut sprinkes, which to be is a little overkill but hey, definitely refreshing on a hot summer’s day regardless. Let me know what you think of it?

G and I reckon, Rasa Sayang wins it for best Malaysian food in Dubai. I’ve told them to include Sarawak Laksa into the menu, hopefully kolomee, and a few other of our favourites from home. I’m back there next week with workmates, and possibly every so often now. They even do delivery to the Oud Metha area so I’m gonna start getting it delivered to mine as well 😉

Want to try authentic Malaysian food, don’t know where to go? Give them a try. Prices are reasonable (you don’t need any vouchers for this place, seriously), there’s ample parking, you got no excuses 😉

Photo updates, for our feast on the 12th of June, returning two weeks after the original post.

Rasa Sayang, revisited, with a group of 6 last night. Asian food is to be shared with big groups, so you can actually try a little bit of everything! It was fairly quiet last night when we went. Food was still just as good. Cha Kueh Teow (Wok-fried noodles) were my personal favourite. The Singapore mee hoon and Mamak Style Mee Goreng was perfect as well. Think we’re gonna attempt to try everything in the menu.Bill came to be approximately 100AED per person, inclusive of non-alc drinks. Not too bad ay 🙂

    1. Ya lo, not at every Malaysian place. There is a new eatery in Greenlane called Mama Rich (I think copying the Melbourne chain haha…) Where I get my kolomee fix haha
